It is recommended to service your trailer at least every two years to prevent failures. More frequent/daily use can cause faster wear and some services should be performed as often as annually.
Inspection of suspension, axles, and brake systems. Removing and replacing the grease, seals, dust caps, cotter pins, and bearings if needed. Setting bearing tension, adjusting/bleeding brakes, and lubricating suspension pivot locations.
A quick test is to jack up the trailer so the tire is off the ground, place both hands on the tire at the top, and try rocking it towards you. Small movement is ok but substantial movement means they need replacement. The true inspection is to remove the hub and clean/inspect the bearing to check for heat marks and substantial wear.
Trailer Brakes are required on any trailer or camper having a gross weight of 1500 lbs. or more. Usually, the braking capacity on tow vehicles is good; however, it may not be good enough to safely stop the several hundred to several thousand additional pounds that your trailer weighs. Most conventional and fifth-wheel trailers have electric brakes, activated by a controller in the tow vehicle. The controller automatically coordinates the tow vehicle and trailer braking so the two systems work together when the brake pedal is applied.
Breakaway systems are activated in the unfortunate event that the trailer and vehicle become separated. Upon separation, a wire is pulled engaging the trailer brakes. Texas law states that breakaway systems are required on any trailer over 1500 lbs.
Trailers in Texas are required to have reflectors, tail, brake, and license plate lights. Signal lights are also required if the tow vehicle's lights are hidden. Trailers over 80 inches wide must have clearance marker lights.
