Dexter, the leading trailer axle maker, recommends cleaning, inspecting and repacking wheel bearings and inspecting the brakes every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Brakes should be adjusted and wheel nuts torqued every 3 months or 3,000 miles. Even a trailer that mostly sits needs the yearly service, because grease breaks down and seals dry out. Boat trailers that go in the water should have their bearings checked more often. Have it checked before any long trip.
We pull the hubs, clean and inspect the bearings, races, seals and spindles, and replace anything worn. Then we repack them with fresh grease and install new seals, dust caps and cotter pins. We also adjust the brakes (and bleed them on hydraulic systems), set the bearing preload, grease the suspension pivots and check the axles and suspension for wear.
Warning signs include a grinding or rumbling noise, a hub that's much hotter than the others after a drive, grease slung on the wheel, or uneven tire wear. For a quick check at home, jack the tire off the ground, grab it at the top and bottom, and rock it. Slight movement is normal, but a clunk or obvious play means it's time for service. The only sure test is pulling the hub and inspecting the bearings for heat marks, pitting or wear.
In Texas, brakes are required on any trailer with a gross weight over 4,500 lbs. Gross weight means the trailer plus its load. The one exception is a trailer under 15,000 lbs that's never towed faster than 30 mph. Brakes still help on lighter trailers, especially with a heavy load or a smaller tow vehicle. Most utility, travel and gooseneck trailers use electric brakes run by a controller in the truck, and boat trailers often use surge brakes.
If the trailer ever comes loose from the truck, a cable pulls a pin that sets the trailer brakes on their own, using a small battery on electric-brake trailers. Texas requires one on any trailer over 4,500 lbs gross, or any trailer with air or vacuum brakes. It must lock the brakes right away and hold them for at least 15 minutes. We can test your breakaway battery and switch during any service.
Every trailer in Texas needs two red tail lights, two brake lights, turn signals, a white light on the license plate, and two red reflectors on the rear. Trailers 80 inches wide or wider also need clearance lights, side marker lights, side reflectors and hazard flashers. Trailers 30 feet or longer need an extra marker light and reflector at the middle of each side. If your lights are dim, flickering or out, we can trace and fix the wiring.
